Whale carcass attracting tiger sharks off Oahu's south shore

HONOLULU (KHON2) - Honolulu Ocean Safety officials are keeping a close eye on a dead whale floating off Oahu's south shore.

They said it was last spotted by the Kalihi Channel near Sand Island.

Earlier in the afternoon, the whale carcass was floating about a mile offshore, attracting multiple tiger sharks.

NOAA is monitoring the situation.

Many of its workers are on furlough because of the partial government shutdown but will be activated if the carcass gets close to shore.

Based on the current track, it appears the carcass will stay off shore.

People are asked to stay far away from the carcass.
