US government shutdown grounds NOAA survey vessels

The US government shutdown has forced the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to leave its research vessels in port, the NW News Network reported.

The fight between congressional Democrats and president Donald Trump over funding for a border wall has led to a partial shutdown of the federal government, including the Commerce Department which houses NOAA.

As part of its shutdown contingency plan, two large NOAA vessels, used to conduct biomass surveys that are important in calculating fishing limits, remained out of use and moored at their homeport in Newport, Oregon.
