Town lands $180K in grants for waterfront improvements
CAPE CARTERET — The town has received two state grants, totaling more than $180,000, to help buy a 1.47-acre waterfront tract and develop a kayak, paddleboard and canoe launch facility along Pettiford Creek off Highway 58.
Town Manager Zach Steffey said Thursday the grants are from the N.C. Public Beach and Coastal Waterfront Access Program, administered through the N.C. Division of Coastal Management.
The land is at 920 Highway 58, just south of the bridge across the White Oak River.
“The site is ideal for wildlife viewing and … offers a variety of educational opportunities,” Mr. Steffey said. “The first phase would involve the construction of a 20-space parking facility, a path leading to a launch facility, and the construction of docks and kayak launch facilities.”
