Scientists produce first evidence that thinning ice sheets in Antarctica are causing more ice to flow into the sea

Scientists at Northumbria University led the study with NASA jet propulsion specialists

Scientists say they have produced the first evidence that thinning ice sheets in Antarctica are causing more ice to flow into the sea.

Satellite measurements taken between 1994 and 2017 have detected “significant changes” in the thickness of floating ice shelves that surround the Antarctic Ice Sheet.

The shelves work to buttress land-based ice and hold it in place like a safety band.
