Nueces County has 'deep concerns' about Trafigura's proposed offshore oil terminal
Nueces County could be joining the Port of Corpus Christi in opposing a proposed offshore oil terminal that would be located near the Padre Island National Seashore.
County commissioners are scheduled to vote Wednesday on whether to send a letter to the Texas General Land Office expressing the county's "deep concerns" about a deepwater port licensing application submitted by international commodities company Trafigura. The company is looking to establish an offshore terminal to load crude oil onto Very Large Crude Carriers outside the port.
The port has made its opposition to the Texas Gulf Terminals project clear, citing environmental and oversight concerns, and Nueces County is the first local entity to adopt a resolution publicly against Trafigura's proposal. In the letter, from County Judge Loyd Neal, he said the county wants to ensure that the project will not "create a disaster' through air quality or water quality degradation.
