NC - Jeep Week plans continue for Topsail Island despite restrictions and questions of access

Peter Sloan and The Greater Topsail Area Chamber of Commerce are looking forward to caravans of Jeeps cruising through Topsail Island in September and showing visitors what the area has to offer.

Topsail Island Jeep Week is scheduled to start with registration Monday, Sept.13 and will continue through the week, with main events starting Friday, Sept. 17. Jeep Week started in 2016 with a mission to bring more visitors to the island after the summer season and to help local businesses.

"What we were seeing was just an erosion of traffic through the island in the shoulder season as everybody got back to school and such," said Sloan, the organizer. "We were looking for a family-friendly way to bring more people to the island and to help businesses in the Topsail area, which it has done tremendously."

During the week, participants will travel through several towns in Pender and Onslow counties. Activities will take place in Topsail Beach, Surf City, North Topsail Beach, Sneads Ferry, Holly Ridge and Maple Hill. Some of the scheduled events include a welcome party at High Waters Sports Bar and Grill, groups of Jeep drivers and passengers going to local beaches, a Jeep obstacle course in Maple Hill, and tours of the Missile and More Museum and the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center.

"We're actually evolving this more into a tourism style event," Sloan said. "We try to show off what we love about the area and this provides not just a time when somebody gets to test their vehicles or test themselves with the vehicle. It provides a little bit of the history and the passion that we have and build down here in Topsail Island."
