ME - Historic coastal Maine inn feeling pinch of second pandemic since its founding
Ken and Patricia Mason are the ninth-generation owners of the Seaside Inn on Beach Avenue, and their dream is to one day pass their family business to the tenth.
A historic pandemic, however, is threatening to stand in their way and is negatively impacting their inn, which has been providing cozy quarters and coastal views to visitors since 1667.
“We’re not sure what’s happening now,” Ken Mason said this week. “We’re not sure what the outcome is going to be.”
Trish Mason chronicles her family’s rich history of centuries in the inn-keeping business in her 2009 book “The Seaside House.” That history seems to be repeating itself, in a way. The family has operated inns on its Beach Avenue property for more than 350 years. According to Mason, in all of that time, only once has an inn on the property had to close for a time: during the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic.
