Italians who love a bowl of spaghetti vongole — the pasta clam dish — after a day lazing on the beach are being warned by experts that soon they may not be able to have both.

The business of dredging sand from the bottom of the sea and dumping it on beaches to protect them from erosion is playing havoc with the natural habitat of the shellfish, Italy’s fishing lobby Fedagripesca has claimed.
