Schottel propulsion for German LNG-fueled research vessel

Germany - Schottel propulsion for German LNG-fueled research vessel

Germany-based Schottel has supplied the propulsion units for the country’s first seagoing government agency LNG-fueled vessel, the Atair.

Currently under construction at Fassmer in Berne, Atair, a survey, wreck-search and research vessel is equipped with Schottel propulsion systems comprising a Schottel pump jet, a Schottel Transverse thruster in the bow and one transverse thruster in the stern of the vessel.

Schottel noted that the vessel was ordered by the German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH). Its underwater noise optimized to meet the DNV Silent Class Notation.

Atair features a 130-cbm liquefied natural gas tank onboard enabling the vessel to run on LNG alone for ten days. When opting for diesel operation (dual fuel), high-quality diesel fuel oil with a sulphur content less than 0.1 percent is used.
