FL - Right Whales Spotted Off Cape Canaveral and Cocoa Beach, Florida

CAPE CANAVERAL and COCOA BEACH, Florida – Endangered right whales are migrating south along Florida’s east coast and were spotted off of Cocoa Beach and Cape Canaveral, Florida on Friday, January 31, 2020.

The two whales, a mother and her calf, were spotted just north of the Cocoa Beach Pier on Friday morning.

The pair of whales then swam northward towards Jetty Park by Friday evening.

The whales also attracted a pod of dolphins or porpoises that swam around the whales that were located just past the wave break.

A Florida Fish and Wildlife boat escorted the whales to ensure that other boats and ships did not collide with the whales.

From November 15 to April 15 each year, pregnant females migrate from their northern feeding grounds to the sheltered waters of the calving ground to give birth to their young off of the east coasts of Georgia and Florida.
