FL - Mote Marine Releases Nine Rehabilitated Sea Turtles
Staff from Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium released nine juvenile, endangered, Kemp’s ridley sea turtles on Monday in New Smyrna at Canaveral National Seashore, after their rehabilitation in Sarasota.
Since November, Mote has received and cared for three separate groups of turtles found stranded during cold-stun events in the Cape Cod region. Sea turtles are unable to regulate their body temperature when they encounter water that is too cold and become lethargic, making them susceptible to predators and other problems. Mote has cared for more than 20 turtles stranded because of the cold weather in New England, which has caused more than 900 strandings. Since they initially were stranded in the Atlantic Ocean, the turtles were taken to the east coast to be released.
The last group of turtles rescued arrived at Mote on Dec. 22 and are still receiving care. To read more about the turtles, visit mote.org/hospital.
