FL - Four artificial oyster reefs to be constructed at Rock Creek in Naples
The city of Naples is continuing construction of artificial oyster reefs at the mouth of Rock Creek where it empties into the Gordon River.
The project is one of three permitted city oyster reef restoration locations in Naples Bay. The city completed work on artificial reefs in the southern part of Naples Bay in 2019.
About 80% of oyster reefs in Naples Bay have been lost since the 1950s due to urbanization, said Stephanie Molloy, the natural resources manager for the city of Naples.
Four artificial oyster reefs will be built at the Rock Creek location near the Gordon River Bridge, Molloy said.
