FL - Fort Myers Beach Council approves plan to expand beach renourishment project
Town Manager Roger Hernstadt will apply for county, state funding to cover work on central, south end of beach
The Town of Fort Myers Beach Council voted Monday to authorize Town Manager Roger Hernstadt to seek additional funds from Lee County to expand the scope of the town’s beach renourishment project.
“Our plan is to permit the entire beach and do as much as we can to get as much as we can of state Tourist Development Council funds,” Hernstadt said. Hernstadt is hopeful the beach will be renourished from one end of town to the other.
“We’re just trying to set it up like dominoes,” Hernstadt said.
Hernstadt said the county has approved the planning for the project. He said the state would have to approve additional funds.
The beach restoration project, which has received approximately $1.3 million from Lee County for beach re-nourishment, erosion monitoring, as well as beach and shoreline maintenance, is currently in the design phase.
