EPA Launches Program to Partner with Maritime Industries

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 1 office has launched “Smart Sectors New England,” a partnership initiative between EPA and its regulated sectors, including maritime industries and outdoor recreation, that is focused on achieving better environmental outcomes.

Based on the national Smart Sectors program, this approach provides an opportunity for EPA to consider ways to protect the environment by working with sectors in the states of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont.

New England has an extensive coastline supporting maritime sectors that support coastal communities, including shipping ports, fisheries’ facilities, boatbuilding, ferries, tourism, recreation, and waterfront revitalization. These industries are impacted by EPA regulations aimed at environmental protection, but traditionally have had no input into those regulatory programs. Smart Sectors will provide a voice for the maritime industry to share its concerns while learning more about EPA’s goals and strategies for environmental conservation.

EPA New England will hold forums and workshops to facilitate communication between industry and EPA. Staff will conduct educational site visits to area businesses; host roundtables with EPA leadership; analyze data and advise about options for environmental improvement; and maintain open dialogue with business partners and their environmental committees.
