Did this surfer notice the 30-foot gray whale right under him? We may never know

It’s hard to know what lurks beneath the ocean surface. A massive, 30-foot mammal could be swimming beneath you — and you may not even know it. That’s what happened on Saturday, Jan. 26 when a gray whale cruised over to a lone surfer who was sitting on a board between Balboa Pier and Newport Beach.

“We were watching it for a while,” he said. “We noticed the surfer in the water, a bit of away and the whale started making a beeline toward the surfer.”

Girardeau said he followed the whale with his drone as it headed toward the surfer. The whale lingered near the surfer — about 5 or 10 feet away from him.

“I don’t even think he had a clue,” Girardeau said. “It was pretty much under him.”
