Commission to consider funding for beach renourishment study in Ponte Vedra

The decision about whether to put $1.2 million toward a beach renourishment project in Ponte Vedra Beach and then how to raise that money will fall on the St. Johns County Commission at today’s regular meeting.

The renourishment item is scheduled to be heard at 1 p.m. It’s something that has drawn a lot of attention and drawn a lot of support from Ponte Vedra property owners.

Today’s item will be the second reading of the ordinance that would establish a Phase I Municipal Service Taxing Unit (MSTU), which would fund approximately $1.2 million to complete preliminary work for development of a beach renourishment project. That would include permitting, studies and design.

Because it’s the second reading, there will be a vote on the action. The first reading took place in November.

According to the county, the owners of 746 properties east of Ponte Vedra Boulevard in the affected area were sent surveys. Of those, 65 percent of the surveys were returned, and of that amount 92 percent favored creating the MSTU. The millage rate increase would be 0.6 of a mill.
