Chinese fishing giant launches tuna plant in Vanuatu

Chinese state-owned company China National Fisheries Corporation (CNFC) has launched a new tuna processing plant in Vanuatu, an island nation located in the South Pacific Ocean.

e Sino-Van plant, a joint project with the local government, is located on the outskirts of Vanuatu's capital, Black Sands.

The plant was formally launched by Vanuatu's prime minister Charlot Salwai last week, 15 years after negotiations first began with the Chinese company, the Daily Post reported.

Vanuatu's fisheries minister, Matai Seremaiah (see photo), said the company paid a $1 million deposit earlier this year as a show of commitment to the project, Radio New Zealand reported. He added the company had made a commitment to have the project up and running this month.
