WHAT: The U.S. Green Building Council-Los Angeles Chapter (USGBC-LA) will host its quarterly Thought Leadership event, a 5-hour symposium on “Reducing California’s Fire Risk” online Thursday, June 17th. The event will begin with virtual tours and expert interviews provided by local green building chapters in Northern and Southern California, leading to multiple keynotes from state leaders, feature panels from industry experts addressing the issues from a community and building level, and then conclude with networking and meeting space in a virtual environment.
Virtual tours illustrate proper preparedness, processes, materials and actions any Californian can take.
Policy makers and regulators leading California’s fire risk reduction efforts will speak to the policies that come into effect this year, as well as those that are currently under consideration.
Our panel conversations will address how urban planners can enhance the safety of the communities they invite as well as the building materials and practices that can further reduce the risk of losing structures.
KEYNOTES: CA Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara, and Deputy Secretary for CA Natural Resources Agency, Jessica Morse.
POWER PANEL: Sen. Anthony Portantino (25th District), Sen. Henry Stern (27th District), and Assemblymember Jim Wood (2nd District).

WHY: Fire season used to be seasonal; it is now year round, increasingly deadly and incredibly costly. This symposium is part of a broader professional training and development program designed to reduce the risk to - and posed by - the more than 4.5 million homes in California’s wildland urban interface. In hosting this event, USGBC-LA aims to inspire proactive risk reduction approaches within the green building community of architects, builders, developers, urban planners and landscapers - as well as all Californians.
The symposium aims to convene fire scientists, firefighters and fire safe councils, forest management professionals, cultural burning and environmental advocates, and more.
