CA - Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute Awarded $53M to Continue Exploring Ocean Health
The central coast has become a popular travel spot for humans and a migration hotspot for marine life.
Thanks to a $53 million grant — championed by Congressman Jimmy Panetta — Monterey County Bay Aquarium researchers will gain a better understanding of the ocean not only at the central coast but around the world.
The money allows The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) to monitor ocean health through robotic fleets. The grant was approved by the National Science Foundation (NSF).
“Panetta has been a strong advocate for NSF funding and making sure the accounts that provide for this type of research are funded at a robust level in each annual appropriations bill.” Panetta’s Press Secretary Sarah Cronin said.
Last year’s appropriations bill increased the NSF budget by 2.5%, according to Cronin. That money helped fund research and education programs, like those at MBARI.
