BOEM to prepare EIS for potential 2019 Beaufort Sea lease sale
The U.S. Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management will prepare an Environmental Impact Statement in support of a potential 2019 oil and natural gas lease sale in the Beaufort Sea off Alaska’s north coast, Kallanish Energy reports.
The EIS will look at potential effects of leasing, exploration, development and production of oil and natural gas in the proposed lease sale area, that covers 65.1 million acres.
The notice to prepare an EIS appeared last Friday in the Federal Register and that opens a 30-day public comment period that runs through Dec. 17.
During that time, the BOEM will hold four public meetings in Alaska from Dec. 3-6 and will accept public comments at www.regulations.gov.
The federal action does not mean a final decision to hold a lease sale has been made, the Boem said, in a statement. Rather, the information gathered during the public comment period will help Boem prepare the EIS, which in turn will inform a final decision on whether to hold the proposed sale.
